So I've been battling with a horrible HP photo printer for the last year and the thing never works properly on a mac. The quality on the prints (with their own paper, of course) is great, but the thing is never consistent. It usually never reads my mbp unless i constantly reset it or power off reset (HP even has a page explaining this is a norm for this printer) Like any angry person, i punched the LCD screen a few minutes ago so now it's really broken (and i feel really good about it.haha) any recommendations for a good photo printer to be used on a mbp?
I have mine connected to a mac display 24/7 so the mbp never moves (i don't know if that helps with any info needed) thanks! I used to buy mid to high end photo printers, but the ink situation just got really expensive. Especially when you have several individual color cartridges, and each one is $10-15 a color. I've now switched to having Costco and snapfish take care of casual photo printing needs- they print with professional long lasting inks on photo quality paper.
Take your cherished memories to the next level with the PIXMA iP8720 Wireless Inkjet Photo Printer. The PIXMA iP8720 allows you to print stunning borderless photos up to 13” x 19”! The Kodak Photo Dock printer had the best photo quality of the smaller, portable snapshot printers we tested. The machine uses dye-sublimation technology, which isn’t as precise as inkjet but much more vivid than zero ink, or zink, print technology.
Stay away from CVS/Wallgreens/Walmart- I've never been happy with their quality and color reproduction. For bigger/special pictures I go with Mpix. They are oriented for the prosumer-pro audience. They accept large PSD/TIF files with color calibration profiles, and there is an option where they won't re-color correct/mess with your files. (On Costco and snapfish, they will usually apply some auto color correction which can create some unpredictable results sometimes).
Click to expand. The problems that you describe has nothing to do with the Mac and everything to do with the underlying inkjet technology on which the printer is based. The printer stripes ink onto paper that is stepped through its mechanism.
There is virtually no reason to hope for consistency. Back in the day, the printer technology of choice for digital images was dye sublimation. However, this technology was even more expensive than inkjet cartridges. Believe it or not, I find that Xerox wax ink printers such as the ColorCube 8570 produce photographic images as good [or better] than inkjet printers. I too have had problems with my HP Printers.
After fighting two of them, I decided to drop the brand altogether and switch to Epson. I have an Epson Aritsan 835 (current model is the 837) that I have had for a while which I love. Works well in my household of Macs and PCs. Wireless setup is a breeze 9if you happen to have more than 1 computer), and its color accuracy (when printing from an iMac that has been color calibrated and also when using printer profiles for specific papers) has been excellent.

I have also moved away from Epson inks and now refill using 3rd party inks and refillable cartridges. For the price of 1 set of Epson OEM carts, I purchased refillable carts and enough ink to refill each cart 10 times. Going forward it will be even cheaper as I will just buy ink. My ink cost per page is non-existant.
